MANILA – A truck which swerved to avoid an overtaking ambulance caught fire when it overturned along Barangay Karuhatan, Valenzuela early Tuesday morning, reports said.

The driver, identified as Jeffrey, told fire officers that he was traversing Marcos Highway in Barangay Karuhatan when an ambulance attempted to overtake the truck.

Jeffrey said he tried to avoid the ambulance, causing the truck to overturn.

"Biglang nag-cut ang ambulansya. Pinilit kong iwasan, hindi kinaya. Paglabas namin nasusunog na," the driver said.

According to SFO2 Enrico Valerio, commander of the Karuhatan Fire Rescue, the blaze started at the truck’s rear wheel when its electrical wiring created a spark.

"Puno ng krudo ang truck, nag-spark kaya nag-apoy," he said.

The fire was put out after a few minutes, Valerio said.

The helper, who remains unidentified, was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, authorities said.

Meanwhile, fire fighters advised drivers not to panic in case their trucks overturn.

“Huwag mataranta, ihanda agad ang fire extinguisher kapag tumaob ang sasakyan. May mga pagkakataon kasing kundi umuusok, ay nasusunog ang mga truck na naaksidente,” they said.
