MANILA, Philippines – At least 19 families were evicted from their homes in an informal settlement in Payatas, Quezon City on Thursday.

The families, living in a lot at the corner of Litex Road and Narra St., tried to block the demolition team using steel barricades and tires. They also hurled stones and other hard objects at the demolition team.

The violence started at around 9 a.m. The demolition team eventually penetrated the compound and started tearing down the houses.

At least one resident, Normelito Robes, was injured from the scuffle. He said he was mauled by some members of the demolition team after he tried to prevent them from entering the compound.

The Quezon City government intends to use the 19,000-sq. m. lot to erect a 4-storey building extension of the nearby Payatas B Elementary School.

The Quezon City government said a relocation site in Montalban, Rizal is available for the evicted residents.

The incident snarled traffic in the area, with the residents blocking the entire Litex road for about 10 minutes. – report from Johnson Manabat, dzMM
