MANILA – Pasay City policemen have arrested seven alleged members of the so-called "Acetylene Gang" who were seen inside a sewerage while reportedly trying to break into a pawnshop.

An employee of Magdalena Pawnshop, located along Libertad Street, said he saw 3 armed men inside a sewerage who seemed to be making a pasage into the pawnshop, prompting him to call for help from the police.

He said he was ordered by the pawnshop owner to check the sewerage because strange noises were heard coming from beneath the road since Monday.

Members of the Pasay City Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) police team fired several shots in an attempt to force the suspects out of the sewerage.

A certain Roel Yumol then arrived, claiming the men were his brothers.

Yumul said the suspects are not thieves and were only there to collect copper.

He then asked permission to convince them to come out.

All possible exit points were guarded to prevent them from escaping.

Police waited for almost seven hours for the men to come out of the sewers. They were immediately arrested upon coming out.

Authorities said the suspected burglars deviated from the usual modus operandi of renting a room right beside a pawnshop they plan to ransack.

Police are still investigating how members the group used their tools, which required electricity, while inside the sewerage. – with reports from Dennis Datu,dzMM and Maan Macapagal, ABS-CBN News
