MANILA, Philippines -- Environmental watchdog EcoWaste Coalition warns the public against purchasing lucky charms that allegedly contain toxic metals, in time for the coming Chinese New Year celebrations.

Ecowaste Coalition said 28 lucky charms they purchased from stores in Binondo District, Manila last January 31 tested positive on chromium, lead, cadmium, mercury, arsenic and antimony, which are all harmful to the health.

Included in the group's list of toxic lucky charms are the "Baby Boom" amulet and the Chi Lin (Dragon Horse) amulet which both tested high on lead.

The Ecowaste Coalition said accessories containing the toxic material may cause difficulties among pregnant women such as miscarriage and premature birth. -- Report from dzMM
