MANILA -- The president of an association of jeepney drivers in Guadalupe Nuevo, Makati was shot dead by a still unidentified gunman Monday night, reports said.

Dead on the spot was Vemindo Jose, who served as president of the association for 14 years.

According to PO3 Alvin Laggui of the Makati Sub-station 7, Jose was shot at close range in the head by a lone gunman, who managed to elude arrest.

Laggui said that after the shooting, witnesses and a security guard attempted to go after the gunman, who hid inside a nearby public market.

CCTV footage showed that the suspect stripped off his black shirt and bull cap, hid his gun and looked for a way out.

The same CCTV footage showed the suspect exiting the market in a white shirt.

"Nakuha po namin yung itim niyang shirt at sumbrero... Kaya siya nagpalit ng damit para di siya ma identify... Pag labas niya wala na siyang bull cap at itim na shirt kaya nahirapan din tayo," Laggui said.

Meanwhile, the victim's brother, Ret. Gen. Biene Jose, said jealousy and politics at work may be the motive behind the killing.

"Nagsimula ito sa trabaho nya. Maaring yung mga naiingit sa kanya. Siguro nainggit yung mga kalaban nya kaya siya pinapatay," he said.

Police described the suspect as 5'5 - 5'6 in height, with fair complexion, heavily built, 30 to 35 years old, with tattoos on his chest and both arms.

Authorities are encouraging the public to report any information about the suspect at the Makati police, at 882-45-76 and 870-1956.
