MANILA, Philippines – The rehabilitation of the Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA) will begin in May, officials said on Friday.
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and the Metro Manila Council have approved the months-long rehabilitation of one of Metro Manila's busiest thoroughfare in a meeting held today.
Metro Manila mayors, DPWH Secretary Rogelio Singson and Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Francis Tolentino have also agreed to identify alternative routes while the rehabilitation is ongoing.
Singson earlier said the rehabilitation works, which has a budget of P3.4 billion, may last for about a year.
The rehabilitation project will involve the concrete re-blocking and asphalt overlaying of certain parts of EDSA.
Singson said in order to avoid traffic jams, the DPWH will come up with a schedule of the rehabilitation works. The re-blocking will only be done during weekends.
He said traffic will be inevitable since concrete takes at least 3 days to properly cure.
The project will have three bidding packages based on three segments of EDSA, according to Singson.
The first segment is from Roxas Boulevard to SM Megamall, while the second segment is from SM Megamall to TriNoma. The third segment is from TriNoma to Balintawak.
The government hopes to finish the rehabilitation project in time for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in 2015. – with a report from Dexter Ganibe, dzMM
