MANILA -- A woman died and 144 families were rendered homeless after a fire razed 36 homes in Brgy. Pasong Tamo, Quezon City on Friday.

Authorities identified the fatality as Cherry Samonte, who suffered from a heart attack during the fire.

Two others were reported to have sustained minor injuries.

Quezon City Fire Marshall Supt. Jesus Fernandez said the fire originated from the house of Amy Taybocsin, which was being occupied by Rosario Austria at around 1:45 pm.

Because the area has very narrow streets, residents had to take down the walls of a nearby cemetery, Himlayang Pilipino, so they could run to safety.

Damage to properties has been estimated at P2 million.

The fire, which reached third alarm, was declared out at 3:20 p.m. -- Report from Robert Mano, DZMM
