MANILA, Philippines -- A gas pipe leak caused the explosion in Bonifacio Global City (BGC) in Taguig Wednesday, police confirmed Thursday.

According to the final report of Taguig Police led by Chief Supt. Percival Placer, district operation and planning division chief of the Southern Police District (SPD), gas leaked from the centralized gas system of BGC, resulting in an explosion.

The blast occurred in front of the Two Parkade building at the corner of 7th Ave. and 30th Street at around 4:30 p.m.

Authorities said the explosion sounded like a blown tire and was followed by a strong gas odor. It also caused several manhole covers to be lifted off the ground.

Police Chief Supt. Jose Erwin Villacorte, chief of SPD, said the pipelines in the area had already been fixed by the Megatrend Company.

Taguig Police also assured the incident was not terrorism- or election-related.
