Two hurt in UP Diliman explosion

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) – At least two people were wounded when a device, believed to be a pillbox, exploded inside the University of the Philippines Diliman campus on Monday.

The pillbox exploded near Palma Hall and injured two maintenance workers, according to the Quezon City Police.

The victims were identified as Faustino Valencia, 38, and Leonardo Natividad, 45. The two were reportedly digging the soil where the explosive was planted.

UP Special Services team leader Lawrence Mapala said the two victims were tasked to install lighting in the area.

Initial investigation revealed that the pillbox was made of powder from pyrotechnic products.

The injured victims were brought to East Avenue Medical Center for treatment.

Bomb experts are now in the area conducting an investigation.

The police and the UP administration have yet to establish the motive for the bombing. – report from Zhander Cayabyab, dzMM
