MANILA, Philippines -- The Department of Education (DepEd) on Saturday opened the early enrollment of kindergarten and elementary students for the coming 2013-2014 school year.
Parents of students trooped to public schools on Saturday morning to register their children months before the next school year starts.
In Commonwealth Elementary School (CES) in Quezon City, parents lined early to register their children. CES is known to have the biggest population of students across the country.
Meanwhile, in Baseco Elementary School (BES) in Tondo, Manila, officials said they expect an increase in the number of students, which reached 7,300 for the 2012-2013 school year.
The early enrollment not only targets regular students but also out-of-school youth and indigenous peoples.
Registration at schools ends at 5 p.m. Parents are only required to submit a copy of their kids' birth certificate.
The DepEd's early registration for students will continue until June. -- Reports from Dennis Datu and Johnson Manabat, dzMM
