MANILA, Philippines – A police officer was injured in a violent demolition at the corner of Lourdes St. and Roxas Blvd. in Pasay City on Friday morning.

The cop, identified as SPO2 Angel Atos, is a member of Pasay’s Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) team that responded to the scene.

Atos was hurt after several security guards protecting the lot hurled rocks at the demolition team. Atos was hit on the face and may require surgery.

Supt. Joel Villanueva, team leader of the security detail assigned to accompany the Pasay Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 112 sheriff, said 8 security guards were arrested in the incident.

They will face charges of direct assault, physical injury and violation of the election gun ban.

The demolition team went to the area at around 8:30 a.m. to implement the writ of possession in favor of the Herrera family against land developer SMDC, which plans to erect a condominium at the 5,000-square-meter land. -- Report from Dexter Ganibe, dzMM
