MANILA -- Militant groups held protest rallies against the P4.15 kilowatt per hour (kwh) power rate hike of the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) on Monday.

A picket-rally was conducted in front of the Supreme Court by the Philippine Airlines Employees Association (PALEA).

The Strike the Hike Network, a consumer group under the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan)-Metro Manila, held a picket at the Meralco Bayad Center in Sampaloc, Manila.

Highlighting the rallies was "Juan dela Cruz" sitting on a mock electric chair.

Meanwhile, a 30-minute "Lights Off" protest was also held at Brgy. 413, Lardizabal St., in Sampaloc, at the back of the Bustillos Church, prior to a vigil held by the group Anakpawis.

On Tuesday, the group Bayan will also lead a protest rally in front of the Supreme Court before the oral arguments on the power rate hike commence.

The Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) is expected to join the protest rally.

TUCP spokesperson Alan Tanjusay said power rate hikes should be stopped. -- Reports from Noel Alamar, Radyo Patrol DZMM
