Escalator malfunction injures 16 at Ayala MRT

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – Sixteen people were injured when an escalator at the Ayala Station of the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) malfunctioned on Tuesday night.

According to Makati Public Safety Assistance Group, the 16 suffered slight bruises.

The escalator at the station has already been temporarily shut down after it malfunctioned during the rush hour this evening.

According to some of the victims, the escalator was crowded and was ascending when the accident happened.

The escalator suddenly stopped, and many lost their balance.

Seconds later, the escalator moved downwards causing some of the victims to fall on their hands and knees.

As of posting, most of them had already been treated for their minor injuries.

Management of the MRT is checking to see what happened and what caused the malfunction.

Many of the injured said this particular escalator is always crowded since many people use it to go to the MRT.
