MANILA, Philippines - A man was mauled, stabbed, and shot dead by an angry mob just outside the Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center in Manila on New Year's eve, police said Sunday.

The victim was identified as Fernando Mendoza Jr.

It is unclear how the incident started but video footage shows a number of men ganging up on Mendoza.

The first beat him up, then a man approached him and appeared to stab him in the neck.

Mendoza was able to move away, but the angry mob pursued him and someone shot him with a homemade gun at close range.

"Papunta po kami sa Luneta. May nagkakagulo po sa jeep hanggang napasali na kami," said the victim's cousin, Maylene Mendoza.

Onlookers brought the victim to the hospital after the mob left the area, but doctors failed to revive Mendoza.

His assailants escaped.

Superintendent James Afalla, chief of the Manila Police District defended police from criticisms, saying law enforcers responded to the incident.

The victim's relatives are now seeking justice for Mendoza. - report from Francis Faulve, ABS-CBN News; ANC
