MANILA – President Benigno Aquino III asked the Filipinos to emulate the ideals of Jose Rizal, as the nation commemorates the national hero's 118th death anniversary.
In his Rizal Day message, Aquino said Rizal is an exemplar of citizenship, ''and in his triumphs and sacrifice, we imbibe the inspiration to continue the fight for the Filipino."
Aquino led Tuesday morning's wreath-laying ceremony at the Rizal Monument. He was with the descendants of Rizal, as well as Vice President Binay and Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada.
Aquino said Rizal's courage, deeds and generosity of spirit should ''invigorate and impassion us as a people, that we may remain unwavering in the duty to bequeath succeeding generations with the dignified, progressive future they deserve."
The president said Filipinos today are enjoined to walk the path of accountability and commit themselves to the task of nation-building.
''We shall compose the next chapters of our history and pass it on to coming Filipinos. United, let us strive to leave them a legacy of an empowered and proud nation,'' he said.
