MANILA, Philippines - Malacanang on Friday appealed to the public to minimize firecracker-related injuries when they welcome 2013.

Deputy Presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said the health department has been actively promoting the "Iwas Paputok" campaign to reduce injuries.

The government appealed to parents to supervise their children and prevent them from using "Piccolo" firecrackers.

Valte said that while the number of firecracker-related injuries remains low, it should stay that way.

Nevertheless, she said government hospitals are fully equipped and prepared for possible injuries from New Year's Eve festivities.
