MANILA, Philippines – Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Tagle, who was recently installed as cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI, reminded Filipinos of the importance of faith this Christmas season.
Tagle said removing faith from Christmas “is to empty it of its meaning.”
“Faith in God leads us to solidarity with our neighbors, especially the poor whom Jesus loves. Faith makes us sharers in Jesus' saving mission and heralds of true freedom from all that enslave us,” Tagle said in his Christmas message.
The year 2012 was declared Year of Faith by Pope Benedict XVI, who recently named Tagle and 5 other non-European bishops as cardinals.
“What can the Year of Faith contribute to the Christmas spirit? Faith is a living and sustained relationship with God,” Tagle added.
Tagle also wished Filipinos a Blessed Christmas, saying he prays that “all Christians may appreciate more the precious gift of faith during this Christmas season.”
