MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) - Former President Joseph Estrada Tuesday said Chief Justice Renato Corona should not fear his upcoming impeachment trial if he believes he is innocent.
At a special mass commemorating Fernando Poe Jr.'s 7th death anniversary, Estrada said Corona's impeachment somehow mimics the impeachment proceedings against him more than 10 years ago.
"Nangyari sa akin yun. So siguro may due process. Yung akin, bigla na lang inakyat sa Senado. Ang nangyari lang, yung mga prosecutor kahit hindi kasali sa charges, sumama kaya nagkagulo. Hindi natuloy yung impeachment. Ako wala akong pinigil, nakahanda akong harapin lahat ng inakusa sa akin," he said.
Estrada said that as long as the impeachment proceedings are accomplished through due process, they can be justified. He also challenged Corona to face the charges made against him.
"Kung wala siyang kasalanan, harapin niya," he said.
The former president, meanwhile, commended President Benigno Aquino III for speaking out against Corona.
"Titigil din naman siguro si Presidente sa pagsasalita kapag nagsimula na yung impeachment," he said when asked by reporters about the propriety of Aquino's tirades against Corona during public engagements. With a report from Jorge Cariño, ABS-CBN News
