MANILA, Philippines - Sen. Panfilo Lacson on Thursday pooh-poohed Catholic bishops who said they are seeking divine intervention to stop the passage of the Reproductive Health (RH) bill.
In an interview, Lacson said anyone can pray to seek divine guidance.
"Hindi lang naman Catholic Church may monopoly ng pagtawag sa Diyos. Tayo naman in our own simple little way, meron din tayong paraan tumawag sa Diyos at humingi ng divine guidance. Lahat may capability ang taong nagiisip. We’re already enlightened, we know where we stand," he told reporters.
The senator admitted that he supports the RH bill but noted that he is also pushing for his own amendment to the measure. He said the amendment will remove post-coital and emergency contraceptives in the RH Bill.
"No one knows kailan nagkakaroon ng buhay ang unborn child. So alam ko position ko, so pinaalis ko sa list of essential medicines ang mga emergency contraceptive na pwede gamitin kung di sigurado after sex," he said.
Lacson admitted that the RH Bill has become deeply personal since both sides are passionate about their positions. He said that the essence of democracy is that after the debates, the final vote will determine if a measure is passed or not.
The senator said that based on the voting trend, he expects the RH Bill to be passed in the Senate. He said pro-RH senators want to pass the bill on third reading before they go on Christmas break.
