MANILA, Philippines - Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile favors excluding the right of reply provision in the Freedom of Information (FOI) bill.

In an interview, Enrile said including the right of reply would mean more air time and newspaper space allocated to rejoinders of individuals mentioned in news stories.

"Okay lang sa akin. Dahil unfair naman. 'Pag may right of reply, mapupuno yung peryodiko ng reply, mga radio," he said.

The Senate President said he is not against making some government data publicly available. Under the FOI Bill, the public, including the media, will have greater access to official documents, subject to certain limitations such as those relating to national security and defense.

"Depende kung national security. That's open to discussion, unless you reveal a classified document. If you reveal a classified document that really is sensitive to the state.....I used to handle classified documents eh," he said.
