MANILA, Philippines - The Commission on Elections denied Monday corruption was involved in the purging of party-list groups.

Comelec Commissioner Rene Sarmiento said the poll body follows strict guidelines in approving or rejecting a party-list group.

He said Comelec rulings are a collegial decision and 4 votes out of 7 commissioners are needed to retain the accreditation of a party-list group.

Only 79 out of 296 groups received accreditation to join next year's elections.

At least 15 groups have gone to the Supreme Court to question their disqualification.

"Even among ourselves, we disagree...We've been pleading to Congress please fine-tune the law because we simply implement," he said in an ANC Headstart interview.

He added: "Hopefully, these petitions before the Supreme Court will once and for all refine the party-list system law."
