MANILA, Philippines - Senate President Juan Ponce-Enrile is backing a review of the government's conditional cash transfer program as this can be used by some politicians during the election campaign.
Enrile said there might be basis for Quezon Rep. Danilo Suarez's statement that the CCT program might be abused.
However, he also said the CCT cannot be stopped while the review is ongoing.
"Di naman natin pwedeng sabihin na tigilan muna gutom ng mga mahihirap habang panahon ng kampanya," the Senate President said.
Militant group Anakbayan earlier dubbed the CCT program as "legalized vote-buying" and warned the program might be used to buy votes for administration allies in the 2013 elections.
Social Welfare Secretary Dinky Soliman, however, said the program is "politically blind" and helps only the poorest of the poor.
