MANILA, Philippines - Commission on Elections (Comelec) Commissioner Rene Sarmiento said the situation of party-list groups Akbayan, Bayan Muna, Gabriela and Anakpawis remains very fluid.
"Minsan, sinabi mo, boto ako diyan. Pero last minute, nagbago, may ganun eh. In these kind of cases…nasa limelight, napag-uusapan, controversial. We express our views. Even at the last minute, we can change our votes,” he said.
The fate of the groups in question may either come Friday or Monday next week, Sarmiento and Commissioner Armando Velasco told the media.
Velasco said the en banc had discussions on these issues yesterday, but there was no actual vote yet except a consensus that they will continue discussions tomorrow and if still needed, on Monday.
He is not sure if the decision will be announced to the public once a vote is indeed obtained tomorrow. He said they may wait until the formal promulgation of the resolution.
Sarmiento said the poll body is weighing the pros and cons of Akbayan's registration as well as its track record and the positions of their members in government.
Sarmiento could not say if his colleagues are under pressure by the Palace to retain the registration of Akbayan, which is an ally of the administration.
He said Chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr. has not discussed the matter with them. "Wala naman siyang sinasabi na baka tatawagan kayo, na pagbigyan natin iyan. Wala naman. Baka yung gusto tumawag, careful din dahil lahat ng attention nandito.” - by RG Cruz, ABS-CBN News
