PNoy berates media anew, wants good news

MANILA, Philippines - President Benigno Aquino on Thursday berated media anew for allegedly being averse to reporting good news, particularly the gains of his administration.

Aquino vented his frustrations, this time before the top-level management conference of the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP).
 
He claimed media has been ignoring the good news, such as a recent statement of Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper describing the Philippine economy as a "rising Asian tiger."

"Sa karanasan ko po, tila ba nakasanayan na ng media ang magpaulan ng batikos sa mga lumalabas na balita. Allergic po yata ang iba sa good news," Aquino said. "Kung 'di man iiwasan ang mga ito, ay hahanapan naman nila ng masamang anggulo."

"Bilang mga alagad ng katotohanan, ang responsibilidad po ng mga mamamahayag ay ilatag ang dalawang panig ng anumang kwento mula sa tiyak at beripikado nitong pinagmulan," he said.
 
Aquino said the media has a big role in shaping public opinion and asked that space be given to the administration's accomplishments as well. 
 
"Wala naman po sigurong may ayaw na isulat ang: sa wakas makakapatingin na sa doktor ang mga kababayan natin sa malalayong lugar ngayong nakapagtalaga na tayo ng mga doktor sa isandaan at labingdalawa na munisipalidad sa buong bansa," he said.
 
Aquino also sees no problem with the "right of reply" bill in Congress.
 
"Kung patas na naibabalita ang magkabilang panig ng bawat storya, kung wasto ang detalye ng bawat ulat, at kung nabibigyang-halaga ang kalayaan ng mga Pilipinong bumuo ng sariling pananaw at pasya sa mga usaping panlipunan, wala naman pong dapat alalahanin ang sinumang mamamahayag, 'di po ba?" he said.

The KBP conference centered on how media has coped with fast-changing technology.
 
ABS-CBN president Charo Santos-Concio said the nation's largest media network has adapted with the trend, pointing out ABS-CBN's use of CCTV videos shared by viewers.
 
ABS-CBN has also been helping promote Philippine tourism though the Choose Philippines website.
 
"The boundaries for content had undergone an unprecedented expansion. Now when we speak of content, we do not just mean news or entertainment. We recognize good content is self-created and shared on online social media and we will be there," Santos-Concio said.
