MOA signed to strengthen probe of torture cases

MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Justice (DOJ) inked on Thursday a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Medical Action Group (MAG) to strengthen the investigation and prosecution of torture cases in the Philippines.

The signing was supported by the British Embassy in Manila, whose Human Rights and Democracy Programme will fund trainings to enhance the capacity of investigators in evidence gathering and handling, and to provide prosecutors with appropriate skills on the evaluation of such evidence.

Present during the signing were Justice Sec. Leila De Lima; Steph Lysaght, Political Section head of the British Embassy in Manila; Atty. Milabel Cristobal of the Office of Commission on Human Rights (CHR) chairperson Loretta Ann Rosales; Dr. Erlinda Senturias, member of the MAG Board of Trustees, and a representation from the Office of the PNP chief.
