MANILA - At least a dozen members of Akbayan Youth trooped to the front gates of Congress today, called on lawmakers to attend the remaining sessions and cast their vote for the controversial Reproductive Health (RH) Bill.
Several members of the group each brought life-sized cut-outs of purple-colored letters which spell "VOTE 4 RH" as they encouraged legislators to be present during the deliberations.
They said the usual lack of quorum was one of the reasons why the bill has not been put to a vote.
They urged the congressmen to put off a few appointments in order to attend the remaining sessions before Congress adjourns for the Christmas break.
Akbayan Youth emphasized the need to put the RH bill to a vote considering that a large number of legislators would be pre-occupied with attending to their respective election bids as the 2013 electoral race is fast approaching.
Akbayan Youth said that last month, the House leadership introduced a new version of the RH bill in a bid to expedite the passage of the measure.
They said the new version of the bill still promotes the use of both natural and artificial family planning methods but now targets the country's poorest households as determined by the government.
The Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines is still opposed to the new version of the RH bill.
