MANILA - Religious leaders prayed over President Aquino during the interfaith National Prayer Assembly held to mark the 55th founding anniversary of World Vision.
Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno stood beside Aquino while the religious leaders led by K4 Philippines Intercessors Movement President Bishop Jonel Milan prayed for Aquino’s health and wisdom.
In his speech, Aquino underscored the importance of faith, saying that it helped his father go through trials while in prison.
“In his letter to Soc Rodrigo, he said that it was through meditation, and through faith, that he eventually found his inner peace. His faith allowed him to survive a period of great trial; and it was in his fortitude that I learned how faith can allow a person to stand in the name of the difficult right, as opposed to succumbing to the easy wrong,” he said.
“Faith keeps a person from being overwhelmed by despair. It is that which allows us to stand the tests of the present and believe that the best is yet to come, and that we are capable of making it happen.”
Aquino thanked World Vision for its help in uplifting the well-being of children through its child sponsorship and development programs in poor communities.
Aquino’s speech, however, was interrupted by his persistent coughing, prompting him to quip that somebody may have remembered him.
“Pasensya na po, may nakaalala ho yata sa atin. [Laughter] Sana ho makilala ko na siya sa darating na panahon. [Laughter and applause] Pero unahin ko na muna kayo,” he said.
