MANILA - There is no legal impediment to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo running for another post other than the presidency, her lawyer said Friday.
"Wala namang legal impediment, no law that could bar to run except for the position of president because she is not eligible for reelection," Atty. Romulo Macalintal told Palace reporters.
In case the President decides to run for a post other than president, Macalintal said there is no need for her to resign as Section 14 of Republic Act 9006 repealed Secion 67 of the Omnibus Election Code, which requires that a public offical resign if they will run for another post.
One example is Senator Lito Lapid's failed bid for mayor of Makati City in the 2007 mid-term elections. Lapid did not have to resign from the Senate in order to challenge Makati City Mayor Jejomar Binay.
"At present, walang prohibition o batas na nagsasabing kailangan siya mag resign sa posisyon," Macalintal said.
Macalintal said, however, that the President has not told him what her plans are after her term ends on June 30, 2010.
He said the public should just wait for the deadline for the filing of the certificate of candidacy. Candidates may file from November 20 to midnight of December 1, 2009.
"Maganda yung may suspense. Kung walang suspense, hindi na tayo magkikita rito. Hindi na ako maiimbitahan dito," Macalintal jokingly said.
He said the President won't be influenced by the clamor of her kabalen in her home province of Pampanga to run as one of their district representatives.
Macalintal said this will be a personal decision of the President.
Whatever post the President decides to run, in case she does run, Macalintal said she will be an asset for that institution.
"Kahit anong posisyon ng Pangulo, asset sa anong bahagi," Macalintal said.
He said his presence in the press briefing in Malacañang does not mean that the President will run. Macalintal said he was just invited to respond to questions reporters might have on political issues.
Press Secretary Cerge Remonde said Palace spokespersons should focus on governance issues while political issues should be answered by the president's election lawyer.
Macalintal also said he has no plans of running for the Senate since his wife has threatened to leave him in the event he runs for public office. -- report from Willard Cheng, ABS-CBN News

talagang makapal pa sa pader ang mga mukha ninyo na pipilitin na makaupo muli sa malakanyang at magpatuloy ang pangungurakot. lalo na un mga tuta ni gma na nakikinabang sa kanya sila mismo ang nag nanais na tumakbo muli si gma bilang bise presidente or congreswomen sa lubao, pampanga para sa gayun may pag asa cya maka upo muli sa malakanyang and of course patuloy pa rin ang mga transaksyon nilang pangurarakot sa kaban ng bayan.

noong presidente pa si marcos ay kakaunti lang ang nangungurakot dahil ang pamilya marcos lang and kanilang crony ang nakikinabang but sa ngaun simula sa presidente hanggang sa mga sangay na gobyerno ay pangungurakot ang ginagawa nila meron naman mangilan ngilan na matino na govt servant but karamihan na nakaupo basta may power ay ginagamit nila ito para kumita.

Tanda ko pa nung bata pa ako, aware ako sa kung sino iboboto ng parents ko from local up to national positions, kalimitan oposisyon, at kalimitan talo, so probably ang mga napili nila ang karapatdapat kasi mula panahon ni cory up to now, saan tayo napunta? Sa dami ng bumoto ng mali sa mga umupo, atleast I am proud to my parents that they probably voted the right choice. Magandang pamana, education and moral values, and being a responsible citizen, a responsible voter. And now its time for me to continue the trend, I will choose a right candidate, liamado man o dehado basta ang iisipin ko ay tama ang gagawin ko at maipapaliwanag ko sa aking anak ang mga reasons why I have to choose them. Mahirap kung iboto mo ang nakikita nilang hindi dapat, parang kinukunsinti mo pa ang mali nilang gawa, matitimo sa isipan ng anak mo at kalakihan nila, so kung heto ang nakalakihan ng karamihan sa atin na ang parents nila ay kasama sa mga bumoto sa mga umupong kurap, so wag na po natin icontinue, simulan na natin ang pagbabago sa batch natin, putulin ang trend sa pagpili ng sikat at liamadong hindi karapat dapat. kundi sa puso't isip mong siya ay gagawa ng mabuti, upang ang kalakihan ng mga anak mo na kasabay sa paglaki ng anak ko ay nasa tama.
