Grace Poe rejects GMA medical parole bill
MANILA, Philippines – Senatorial candidate Grace Poe Llamanzares is wary of a bill filed by former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and her son, Camarines Sur Rep. Diosdado “Dato” Arroyo, seeking medical parole for prisoners who are incapacitated due to illness.
In an interview, Llamanzares said medical parole could be abused by rich inmates who will use the law to escape detention.
“Delikado ngayon yan. Sabi nga ni Pangulo ang getaway vehicle ay mga wheelchair na. Magiging unjust yan dahil ang mangyayari, yung mga may kaya maaaring magpasuri sa mga magagaling na doctor. Biglang may mahahanap na karamdaman at biglang makakalusot,” she said during a forum at Manila Diamond Hotel.
Arroyo, who is under hospital arrest for a plunder case, earlier filed House Bill (HB) 6608 or An Act Providing Medical Parole to Qualified Prisoners. Under the proposed law, the Board of Pardons and Parole would be authorized to grant medical parole to prisoners who have been found to suffer from an incapacitating physical disease, condition or syndrome, as diagnosed by a licensed government physician.
The former President is currently undergoing treatment for a spine ailment.
