MANILA - Malacañang will not apologize to the family of slain transgender Jeffrey “Jennifer” Laude over President Aquino’s refusal to attend the victim’s wake.

Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said over dzRB yesterday that Aquino did not have any intention to insult the Laude family.

Aquino earlier explained his reasons for not attending Laude’s wake last Wednesday even when Vice President Jejomar Binay already made a stop.

“In general, I don’t attend wakes of people I don’t know…I’m uncomfortable in trying to condole with people who don’t know me,” the President said. “It’s like how can I say that I really sympathize with their loss and have some relevant discussion with them on trying to assuage their loss at that point in time?”

But the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC) group has urged Aquino to apologize to the Laude family for his statement.

According to VACC founding chairperson Dante Jimenez, Aquino’s statement was insulting and unpresidential.
