MANILA, Philippines – A Malacañang spokesman on Friday expressed frustration at the escalating feud between Akbayan and groups belonging to the extreme left, particularly, Bayan, Anakbayan, and Bayan Muna.
During a press briefing via phone patch, Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said the groups should be transparent about the root of the fight, and explain to the public that it is a matter of ideological differences, rather than project that it is merely about Akbayan earning the good favor of the Aquino administration.
“Ang away po ng dalawang ito, it’s not about whether close sila kay Pangulo. Napakababaw po non,” he said.
“Alam po naming lahat yan na may ayaw sigalot na po ang Akbayan at Bayan Muna.”
Akbayan was formed in the early 1990s, when a faction of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) rejected calls by Jose Maria Sison to “reaffirm” their basic “national democratic” principles, which are largely based on Marxist-Leninist and Maoist schools of thought.
Joel Rocamora, then a member of CPP’s political arm (National Democratic Front of the Philippines or NDFP), left the party and organized Akbayan instead. Since then, the 2 factions have been called “Reaffirmists (RA) and Rejectionists (RJ),” and have been engaging in heated ideological battle since.
Lacierda said while the nation’s democratic space allows this, it would be better if the 2 sides not involve the government.
"Ang sasabihin ko na lang, mag-away na lang kayo, huwag niyo na kaming idamay sa Aquino administration. Aminin niyo na, aminin na ng Bayan Muna, na yung away niyo, ang lalim niyan is the question of the fight between the rejectionists and the reaffirmists,” he said.
“This is just being used, the fact that Akbayan is allied with the administration. Eh totoo naman, nandyan si Ronald Llamas, who’s denying that? But the point is, they’re using this para lang ipalabas – ayaw nilang sabihin na talagang dati pa magkaaway na kayo eh.”
“Let’s call a spade a spade. They are tainting Akbayan right now because they think it is an effective way of diminishing Akbayan. Pero away nila yan eh.”
