MANILA, Philippines - The government is not inclined to privatize public hospitals in the country.

Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda said there is no planned privatization of the hospitals, rather the hospitals will be professionalized.

By professionalizing, Lacierda said: "Improve the services…the ability to sustain itself, those are the things, and also, please note that we are also expanding our PhilHealth. That idea came along also with these discussions on PhilHealth. That's why PhilHealth during the last few months came out and explained the situation.”

Doctors and employees of government hospitals walked out this morning to protest the Aquino administration's plan to privatize hospitals.

Lacierda assured government health workers and the public that the Aquino administration is not taking away the “Emergency Room” or depriving the poor of health services.

"In fact, the poorest of the poor are already covered. Kung hindi kayo covered, when you enter the ER of a government hospital, you will be covered. 'Yan po ang pangako ng PhilHealth, and we have the funds to do that," said Lacierda.
