Malaysian PM arrives to witness PH-MILF pact

Malaysian PM also expected to discuss economic, business issues

MANILA, Philippines -- Malaysian Prime Minister Dato' Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak arrived in the Philippines on Sunday afternoon to witness the signing of a framework agreement leading to a peace pact between the Aquino government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

The Malaysian leader arrived a little past 4 p.m. at the Villamor Airbase in Paranaque and was welcomed by Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario and members of the diplomatic community.

The Prime Minister, who is on an official visit, will also have a bilateral meeting with President Benigno Aquino III before the signing of the framework agreement scheduled at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, October 15.

Malaysia is a third-party facilitator in the peace talks since 2001. The framework agreement was finalized just a week ago in Malaysia.

The Malaysian leader is accompanied by his ministers of foreign affairs, defense and international trade and industry, who are also expected to meet with their respective counterparts here.

Najib, who is in the country for the first time, is also accompanied by his wife, Datin Paduka Seri Rosmah Mansor, an alumna of the Asian Institute of Management, where she will deliver a speech on Monday afternoon.

The Prime Minister is also expected to meet with local businessmen who are under the auspices of the Philippines-Malaysia Business Council.
