MANILA, Philippines - Former President and now Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal Arroyo faced the justice department's preliminary investigation on plunder charges filed against her.
Representing her is former Solicitor General Estelito Mendoza, who also defended former President Joseph Estrada in his plunder trial.
Arroyo's plunder charge is in connection with sale of the Iloilo Airport to Megaworld back in 2007.
The complainant is Danilo Lihaylihay, president of the Philippine Association of Revenue Informers Inc., and chief investigator of the Vanguard Anti-Graft Task Force inc.
Lihaylihay said that while the Arroyo administration had paid the treasury P18 million for documentary stamp tax on the sale, it did not remit the P72 million-peso capital gains tax it collected.
This is the first plunder charge filed against the former president since she stepped down last June 30. -- report from Ina Reformina, ABS-CBN News; ANC
