MANILA, Philippines - Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, who is gunning for re-election next year, said he is ready to resume his role as backchannel negotiator if the President thinks he would be in a position to help the country in its dispute with China.
On the sidelines of the proclamation of the administration senatorial line-up, Trillanes admitted he has not talked to President Benigno Aquino III after he and Senate President Enrile traded barbs at the Senate floor.
Enrile earlier criticized Trillanes for supposedly selling the country’s sovereignty in Panatag Shoal over to China.
The role of Trillanes in the negotiations also raised eyebrows among the diplomatic community. Enrile also claimed Trillanes tagged Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario as the “traitor” by escalating tensions with China. Report by Willard Cheng, ABS-CBN News
