MANILA, Philippines - Philippine Ambassador to Japan Manuel Lopez added his voice of support to Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario amid recent events concerning his role in the continuing discussions with China over the dispute at the West Philippine Sea.
In a statement, the former Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) chairman and chief executive said: “I have no doubt that the secretary is effectively leading our country's diplomatic efforts in these critical and dangerous times."
"His principled defense of our national sovereignty deserves the support of all Filipinos so that we speak with one voice in the world community.”
Lopez said he hopes del Rosario will continue to lead the diplomatic efforts in the years to come.
Del Rosario earlier criticized the back channel efforts of Senator Antonio Trillanes IV with China. ABS-CBNnews.com sources had said the approval of Malacanang of Trillanes’ plans has upset del Rosario.
Highly demoralized, he also “contemplated” resigning.
Malacanang denied this. In a subsequent statement, del Rosario said he will remain true to his commitment of faithfully serving the country.
Ambassador to the US Jose Cuisia and US Pinoys for Good Governance chairman Loida Nicolas Lewis also backed del Rosario.
Lopez noted that in his two years as ambassador in Japan, he saw del Rosario’s patriotism and dedication.
“In my own experience, the foreign secretary once again showed he was a hands-on official who was quick to respond and be in Tokyo to help in our efforts to move Filipinos away from the dangers of nuclear contamination in the wake of the Fukushima disaster,” he said.
“The foreign secretary was always at the forefront of diplomatic efforts to defend our national interest and ensure the safety of our countrymen overseas,” he added.
