MANILA - Liberal Party Caloocan Rep. Edgar Erice thinks President Aquino III might back Senator Alan Peter Cayetano as former Interior Secretary Mar Roxas' running mate should Camarines Sur Rep. Leni Robredo turn down the invitation.
Sources said Aquino may be cold to the idea of fielding Cayetano as Roxas' running mate in 2016.
In the 2010 elections, Cayetano, partymate of Aquino's election rival Manny Villar, questioned Aquino's mental health.
Cayetano is also a fierce critic of the Bangsamoro Basic Law, which is a priority bill of the President.
Roxas formally invited Robredo to become his running mate after his first choice, Senator Grace Poe, decided to join the presidential race.
The President said Robredo is an ideal running mate for Roxas because of her positive image.
Aquino said talks are ongoing between the Roxas and Robredo camps. Robredo earlier said that her children's apprehension about her possible vice-presidential bid and the situation in her province are some of the things holding her back.
Erice said the LP will throw its full support behind Robredo if she accepts Roxas' offer.
"Maraming tutulong kay Leni kung siya mapipili. Whoever will be chosen running mate of Mar Roxas kami sa LP ay susuporta."
Erice, meanwhile, said LP will finalize its national ticket on September 28 at an event at Club Filipino.
