MANILA, Philippines - President Benigno Aquino III is now in Brunei to attend the wedding presentation of Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah's daughter, but also with the intention to launch an “informal diplomacy” with the leaders of neighboring countries.

Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte told radio dzRB that such events are “very rare chances where [leaders] can meet.”

Among those invited are the leaders of Malaysia and Indonesia.

It is not known if China will be represented at the wedding.

Aquino was supposed to meet Chinese President Hu Jintao on the sidelines of the 20th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders’ Meeting early this month in Vladivostok, Russia.

Aquino was raring to meet with Hu to discuss, among others, both countries’ spat over West Philippine Sea.

Conflict of schedules eventually ruined the supposed bilateral meeting, Palace officials later claimed.
