MANILA, Philippines - Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario has recommended to President Benigno Aquino III the designation of newly-installed Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas as a special envoy to an event that will be held in China tomorrow.

In a statement from the Department of Foreign Affairs, the Chinese Government had earlier requested the Philippines to send a high-level delegation to the 9th China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO).

It is an international event that will be held starting September 21 until September 25 in Nanning, China. CAEXPO is a platform for cooperation in the fields of infrastructure investment, trade, and tourism, among others.

Del Rosario’s recommendation is based on the Philippines being the Country of Honor in next year’s expo.

This comes after it was revealed that Senator Antonio Trillanes was undertaking backdoor talks to resolve the country’s maritime dispute with China.

Trillanes had also allegedly recommended that Roxas meet with Chinese officials in a bid to resolve the territorial row over Scarborough Shoal, according to the notes of former Philippine Ambassador to China Sonia Brady, which were read by Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile on Wednesday.
