MANILA, Philippines - Former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo now suffers from numbness, pain and atrophy in different parts of the body near her surgical area.

Arroyo underwent surgery thrice last year to address a pinched nerve in her neck area.

Complications caused by her neck brace implant being dislodged are now causing her problems.

In posts on social networking site Twitter on Thursday, Arroyo said she missed a scheduled Congress pictorial because of her condition.

"I couldn't make it to my scheduled Congress pictorial cuz I wasn't feeling well. :( so I sent a file photo," she said.

Arroyo explained that on doctors' orders, she has been removing her soft collar neck brace. "I've been taking out my soft collar neck brace 4 longer periods as advised by my doctors even when I was still in Veterans to avoid atrophy."

“But my CT scan showed my cervical spine muscles have atrophied, so I have taken my neck brace out for even longer periods. But now I've started to feel numb in the surgical area and shooting pain in the shoulder near the neck, not to mention the old chronic pain," she added.

"That has to be therapied 3 times a week. So I'm back to longer periods with the neck brace," Arroyo said.

Asked about the interventions being done, Arroyo said she is having "intensive physical therapy and longer periods with a neck brace while waiting for second opinion and appropriate treatment.”

Days ago, Arroyo explained that her doctor advised against straining her voice box, which is why she can't participate in the interpellation for this year's budget.

Last year, Arroyo interpellated the sponsor of the budget of the Department of Social welfare and Development. "Thank you for remembering my interpellation. This year it's hard for me to do the same because my doctor says I shouldn't strain my voice box until the mechanical problem of my implant screw heads is resolved."
