MANILA - Of the P56.8 billion budget of the Department of Health (DOH) for 2013, Health Secretary Enrique Ona revealed that P537 million will be spent on family planning services.
These include the distribution of contraceptives, providing ligation, information dissemination on natural family planning methods, and other family planning services.
Ona urged lawmakers to pass the Reproductive Health (RH) bill so that more funding will be put to family planning services.
He also called on lawmakers to pass the sin tax bill for added revenues against diseases and sickness caused by smoking and drinking.
Ona said that aside from family planning, the use of contraceptives, particularly condoms, can lower the alarming increase of HIV/AIDS in the country.
At present, there are more than 10,000 reported cases of HIV/AIDS in the country, with 80 percent of those being infected coming from the homosexual community.
He said that gay men should start using condoms because they are the most susceptible in being infected by the killer disease.
