MANILA - More than 10 health workers belonging to different public hospitals staged a lightning rally inside the House of Representatives during plenary debates on the Department of Health (DOH) budget on Friday.
The debates were temporarily suspended as guards and House pages led the striking heath workers out of the Batasan Pambansa building.
The health workers asked for an increase in the health budget from P56.8 billion to P79 billion.
They also called on the DOH to give the health workers the benefits due them that are included in the Magna Carta for Health Workers.
However, Health Secretary Enrique Ona said the P56.8 billion allotted for the DOH for 2013 is already 23 percent higher than its 2012 budget.
He said that the budget that the DOH has proposed is the highest they can ask for a just distribution of the national budget.
Bayan Muna Rep. Teddy Casiño said he will ask for a re-alignment of funds as he wants some of the funds for PhilHealth insurance be directly given to the government hospitals.
