MANILA, Philippines - If she had her way, Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago would protest the results of the Ms. Universe 2011 beauty pageant, where the Philippines' bet, Shamcey Supsup, placed 3rd runner-up amid high hopes she would grab the title.
"Well, this sounds like I'm sourgraping. But it may have been partly political in the sense that they may have wanted somebody from Portugal or thereabouts in that region to win because Asians have been winning these beauty contests for a while," the senator told reporters on Tuesday.
"Sometimes, you can't discount these possibilities."
Asked if she was serious about filing a protest, Santiago laughed and said, "If there's a legal remedy, I don't think that it might be taken as lacking in sportsmanship."
Santiago described Supsup as an "ideal candidate (who) represented the best of the Filipina."
Miss Angola Leila Lopes won the Miss Universe 2011 crown. Miss Ukraine Olesya Stefanko was the first runner-up, Brazil's Priscila Machado placed 2nd runner-up, Supsup placed third and China's Luo Zilin was 4th runner-up
