MANILA - Doctors from the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) recommended that Senator Juan Ponce Enrile be detained in a hospital due to his present medical conditions that “may be life-threatening.”

In a hearing on Thursday at the Sandiganbayan third division, PGH Chairman Dr. Jose Gonzales and other specialists said Enrile is suffering from several medical conditions, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

The PGH recommended that Enrile be admitted to a tertiary hospital such as the Lung Center of the Philippines or the Philippine Heart Center.

Gonzales said PGH cannot accommodate Enrile because they already have a lot of patients.

Even doctors of the Philippine National Police (PNP) General Hospital, where he is currently staying, agreed.

Doctors said the PNP hospital is a secondary hospital that does not have the necessary equipment to address Enrile’s medical condition.

The prosecution asked for five days within which to comment.

The Sandiganbayan said the issue will be deemed submitted for resolution once the comment is filed. – from a report by Adrian Ayalin, ABS-CBN News
