MANILA - A female Special Action Force (SAF) officer tastes food before it is given to Janet Lim Napoles in detention.
Senior Supt. Reuben Theodore Sindac, spokesman of the Philippine National Police (PNP), on Monday said this is to prevent possible food poisoning of the businesswoman at the center of the pork barrel scam scandal gripping the government.
"Isa sa 2 SAF female personnel ang mag taste sa pagkain. Likewise, ipa-taste muna sa cook bago dalhin sa detention place at pagkatapos iyung female SAF security detail naman for final food tasting," he said.
Sindac said the food tasting is part of the duty of Napoles' close-in security.
Napoles' lawyer, Lorna Kapunan, meanwhile, denied that her client has suicidal tendencies.
She said Napoles has a health problem, which police earlier described as diabetes.
Napoles also suffered an anxiety attack inside her detention room in Laguna before dawn Monday, a police official said.
Sindac said Napoles complained of having an anxiety attack at around 3 a.m. due to claustrophobia.
Sindac said Napoles' blood pressure shot up to 180/150 while her blood sugar dropped to 112 milligrams/deciliter.
A nurse at the Fort Santo Domingo in Sta. Rosa, Laguna said Napoles' condition went back to normal at around 4 a.m. - with a report from Apples Jalandoni, ABS-CBN News
