MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine defense department is planning to buy 2 Italian warships worth P6 billion (US$15 million) each to upgrade the country's defense capabilities, Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin said Wednesday.
Gazmin said the Italian warships or frigates are part of the Department of National Defense's plan to modernize the Armed Forces.
He defended the DND's P121.6 billion budget for 2013 at the House of Representatives' budget hearing. The proposed budget is P15 billion higher than last year's budget.
Gazmin said the budget increase will be used for big investments aimed at beefing up territorial defense.
Several congressmen asked several technical questions particularly with the use of the right technology and capability on the new investments that the DND plans to acquire.
