MANILA - Justice Secretary Leila de Lima on Wednesdau disputed the claim of retired Major General Jovito Palparan that his arrest was a "personal gain" for her.
"Never akong name-mersonal when it comes to the discharge of my job," de Lima said in a text message.
She said she was just doing her job then as Commission on Human Rights (CHR) chairperson when she conducted public hearings in cases implicating Palparan.
De Lima's statement came after Palparan said he does not expect the justice secretary to be fair to him.
Palparan said that de Lima is a cousin of Juliet Sison, the wife of Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) founder Jose Maria Sison.
De Lima, for her part, admitted that Sison is a distant relative of her father. "But I haven't met her in my life. And I never concealed such fact."
She said former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo knew her relation to Sison when she appointed her as CHR chairperson.
President Benigno Aquino III also knew that when he appointed her as secretary of the Department of Justice (DOJ), she said.
"And, so what if she's a relative? Does that make me a Leftist also?" de Lima said. -- Report from Ina Reformina, ABS-CBN News
