MANILA - The Makabayan bloc is all set for the start of impeachment proceedings against President Benigno Aquino III.
Kabataan Party-list Representative Terry Ridon issued the statement following reports that the House leadership is scheduled to refer the impeachment complaints against Aquino to the House Justice Committee in the plenary session on Monday.
"Presently, we in Makabayan are as ready as we can be to discuss and defend the merits of the impeachment complaints at the House Justice Committee deliberations," Ridon said on Saturday.
He said they believe in the soundness of the impeachment complaint filed by youth groups last July 22, accusing Aquino of culpable violation of the Constitution, betrayal of public trust, and graft and corruption in connection with the assailed Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP).
"Even if there are some quarters who blindly seek to block the impeachment proceedings without first hearing the merits of the case, I and my colleagues in Makabayan remain unflustered. we believe that the case against Aquino is strong," he said.
Ridon appealed to the House Justice Committee to consider the merits of the impeachment complaints and refrain from junking the cases just because of party affiliation.
Speaker Sonny Belmonte has reportedly transmitted the three impeachment complaints lodged against the President to the Committee on Rules for inclusion of the complaints in the order of business and subsequent referral to the Justice Committee.
The impeachment proceedings are expected to commence shortly after said referral.
Two other complaints are pending before the House -- one for Aquino's DAP filed by people's organizations and several civil society leaders, and one hinged on the signing of the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA).
