MANILA, Philippines - The Senate has assigned Senator Joker Arroyo to represent the chamber in the Supreme Court on Thursday during oral arguments on the composition of the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC), which is tasked to screen nominees for Chief Justice.
Senate Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III made the announcement during session on Tuesday.
"Sya ang batikang abugado na humaharap sa Korte Suprema," Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile told reporters when asked why Arroyo was chosen.
Enrile said the Senate is determined to argue its case that Congress must have two representatives in the JBC: one from the Senate and another from the House of Representatives.
The Court had earlier ruled that both houses of Congress must have only one representative in the body.
"Not that we want to defy the Supreme Court, but I think it's our duty to point out our position," Enrile said.
