MANILA - Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno attended President Benigno Aquino III’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) even if some quarters had dissuaded her because of the executive’s recent attacks against the judiciary.

Cameras panned several times towards Sereno during Aquino’s one-and-a-half-hour speech on Monday, but she not appear to be contrarian.

Asked for comment after the SONA, Sereno said she holds no grudge against Aquino despite his criticisms over the high court's decision on the Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP).

She said professionalism should be practiced at all times.

Asked if she supports Aquino, she said she is for the constitution and the rule of law.

Aquino took a softer stance in defending the DAP in his SONA. It was unlike his previous speeches where he openly criticized the high court for supposedly failing to understand the essence of the DAP.

Some critics have scored Aquino for his attacks against the judiciary.

Former Senator Joker Arroyo last week said: “As the picture looks presently, the President’s policy is to discredit the judiciary and render it impotent, subjugate further Congress, and make the President supreme.”
